Filters are signal-processing circuits used to modify the frequency spectrum of an electrical signal. They may be used to amplify, attenuate, or reject a certain range of frequencies of their input signals. Filters are pervasive in integrated circuits because of their vast number of applications. Some applications include noise reduction in communication systems, band-limiting of signals before sampling them, conversion of sampled signals into continuous-time signals, signal demodulation, improving the sound quality of audio system components such as loudspeakers and receivers, and many others. Analog filters process continuous-time signals, i.e., signals that are defined at every instant of time. There are many types of analog filters, such as passive, active, biquadratic, and switched-capacitor.

Digital filters process discrete-time signals, which are those that are defined only at specific instances of time. These filters require that a signal from the analog world be digitized by passing it through an Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) before the signal can be processed by the filter. The performance of digital filters is more repeatable than that of their analog counterparts'. Also, digital filters provide a higher degree of freedom in the shaping of the signal's frequency spectrum, as well as a higher degree of programmability. Radio Frequency (RF) signals that contain information at 1 GHz or above require a sample rate that is not practically achievable before they can be processed with a digital filter. Therefore, analog filters are the choice in the RF domain.

In many cases, it is not practical to implement a high quality ADC so signals are processed using analog filters.1 A. Antoniou and W.K.
